The co-operative movement has played an important role in regulation of trade in agricultural produce in the district since the last few years. The co-operative societies strive to eradicate malpractices in agricultural trade and to assure the producers of a just price for their produce. There are also sale and purchase societies at taluka level. The total turn-over of all the regulated commodities handled by co-operative societies in 1968-69, 1970-71 and 1972-73 is given in table No. 62.

Storage facilities are available at a few markets in the district. The Maharashtra State Warehousing Corporation has opened its branches at Barshi, Pandharpur, Akkalkot, Karmala and Sholapur for providing scientific facilities for storage. The storage centres of the Corporation at Sangola and Pandharpur were closed in 1968-69. The sale and purchase unions at Barshi, Pandnarpur, Sholapur and Akluj have built godowns for storing the goods at these places. Besides the cooperative societies and banks have also built godowns of their own at Barshi, Pandharpur and Sholapur.
